I quit Facebook in December 2018. I discussed my reasons in the post Leaving Facebook, which I will list below as well. However, since the lockdowns, I have been thinking about returning.
There are few private health groups I want to join that I believe will provide immediate benefits to me. Also, since I left, I’ve done a poor job of staying connected with family and friends. Facebook can do a much better job than me, especially during the COVID lockdowns.
Why did I leave?
In normal times, I would be perfectly fine being away from what I see as mostly a toxic platform where people that once used to share what brought them joy is now mostly a way to share the news that is upsetting. But these aren’t normal times.
With the US elections over, maybe the hostility level has dropped on Facebook? I’m guessing so. This might be the safest time to return. At least until normal post-COVID life resumes in full.
I was reviewing my 2018 reasons for leaving and with one exception (#4), most are no longer a major concern.
#1 Too Distracting
Since I left Facebook, I developed a daily meditation and breathing practice. Every day for more than 2 years now. My ability to focus has never been greater. Before the social networks had the upper hand on my mind, but now I believe I am in control. If I see myself getting sucked in again, I could always reverse course.
Of course, I would never install the mobile app and only access Facebook in a browser just like a do now for Twitter. And like Twitter, I would use the LeechBlock extension (Firefox) to restrict my daily time on the site to 15 minutes in the AM and 15 minutes in the PM. Chrome has a similar extension called StayFocusd.
When there is a sense of urgency, you don’t endlessly scroll. You do what you need to do and then you leave. I’ve been using this technique with Twitter for a few years now. It works.
#2 No Business Value
This is still true, but it is not important to me. I have no plans to resume pimping content for INeedCoffee on the INeedCoffee Facebook page. It was a total waste of time.
#3 Too Much Sharing, Too Little Creating
This is likely still true, however, I started to think about how I became part of the problem. I was great about not sharing the latest outrage, but I began sharing less and less about myself. Not that it is my role to set a good example, but by silencing myself, I was passively letting the outrage jockeys win the newsfeed.
#4 Less Joy, More Hostility
This is the primary reason I would not return or if I did return is the most likely reason I would leave again. I don’t like how social media has exploited our tribal natures and turned us on each other for their benefit. And it saddens me deeply that most people can’t see they are being exploited.
#5 Seattle Indie Coffee Failure
This bothered me a lot before I left, but I’ve accepted that my goal of increasing the communication between independent coffee shops and their fans was never appreciated, by either side. Or maybe a Facebook group was the wrong tool for the task?
#6 Cult of the Maybes
Since in-person events aren’t happening anywhere (even on Meetup), this is a non-issue. However, post-lockdowns Facebook might actually be a decent place to schedule events as people will be eager to leave their homes. Also, Meetup.com has become far more focused on promoting mega-groups that span multiple cities and countries. The little groups are getting buried.

I still don’t trust Facebook, but they won. The rebels tried to rebel, but COVID crushed the rebellion. At least for now.
I still wouldn’t say anything online that I would not feel comfortable with saying to every person in the world.
Since I left Facebook, the Firefox browser has released an extension that detects if Facebook is running inside a tab and runs it in a container to prevent actions you take outside of Facebook from being tracked. Works for me!
#8 So Slow
Hopefully, the performance issues I had with Facebook Pages have been fixed. If not, then I won’t waste my time on Facebook Pages.
Just When I Thought I Was Out…
…They pull me back in!
I’m leaning towards rejoining Facebook this week. If I do, I’ll do it gradually, by first only connecting with family and a few private health groups. Then close friends. Then if I feel comfortable, expanding my network. Pausing at each step.
